Blossom and I have quite a few hikes on the schedule now that the weather is warming up. I will be sharing our hiking excursions to provide you with some basic information in the event that you might be interested in doing some hiking with your canine companion.
Hiking is great exercise and enrichment for both you and your dog. It's the perfect time to practice foundation training such as automatic check ins and recalls. The overall experience will enhance your relationship. So get out there!
I prepared for our hike by packing a few essential items: mosquito repellent, sunscreen, a compass, mini first aid kit, human snacks, canine snacks, and water for the both of us. Wow, that's a lot! I ended up utilizing a canine backpack for Blossom to carry the supplies. I selected the RuffWear Approach Pack which I purchased from Amazon. It was roomy enough to fit all the items listed above and then some.
Yesterday, we hiked Lewis Creek Trail to check out Corlieu Falls. It was beautiful weather and the falls were spectacular. The trail head is just off Highway 41 in between Oakhurst, California and Yosemite National Park.
The hike is rated easy to medium level. There is a bit of an elevation change before the falls observation deck but nothing that we couldn't handle on our way back out. The trail is well maintained and at this time of year, uncrowded.
Dogs are welcome on national forest trails like Lewis Creek, provided you keep them leashed. I had Blossom on a 20 foot long line to allow her some additional freedom and stay in accordance with the law. Truth be told, most of the hike I dropped it and it was used as a drag line but in the event of a tricky situation it was there. Better to be safe than sorry.
Be on the lookout for our next hiking post when we hike Willow Creek Trail in Bass Lake, California next month!
